Asinara National Park is a secluded island located off the northwest coast of Sardinia, Italy. It is situated in the province of Sassari, with the nearest towns being Porto Torres and Alghero. Established in 1997, Asinara National Park has a rich history. The island was once used as a penal colony, and the remnants of this past can still be seen in the abandoned prison buildings and military structures. In 1969, the prison was closed, and the island was gradually restored to its natural state. Parking facilities are available at the entrance to the park, with a limited number of spaces. Visitors are advised to arrive early to secure a parking spot. There are no specific rules or fees associated with parking. Asinara is home to a diverse range of native wildlife, including the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. The park is also a sanctuary for wild donkeys, which roam freely across the island. Other notable animals include mouflons, falcons, and various species of seabirds. The park's flora is characterized by Mediterranean maquis, a dense scrubland dominated by evergreen shrubs and trees. Common plant species include myrtle, lentisc, rosemary, and juniper. The island also features areas of pine forest and coastal dunes. Asinara National Park offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore a pristine island environment. There are several hiking trails that wind through the park, leading to secluded beaches, ancient ruins, and panoramic viewpoints. Public transport is not available to reach Asinara, but visitors can take a ferry from Porto Torres or Alghero. Photo Credit: Cristian85
