Starting your hike near King County, Washington, the trailhead for this adventure is conveniently located at the Alpental Ski Area parking lot. If you're driving, take I-90 East from Seattle and exit at 52 for West Summit. Public transport options are limited, so driving is recommended.The journey begins with a well-marked path leading you through dense forest, offering a gradual ascent. After approximately 2.5 km (1.5 miles), you'll reach the first significant landmark, Snow Lake. This pristine alpine lake is a popular spot for a quick rest and photo opportunity. The elevation gain to this point is around 300 meters (984 feet).### Snow Lake to Gem LakeContinuing along the trail, you'll encounter a series of switchbacks that take you higher into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. The trail here becomes steeper, and the terrain more rugged. After another 3 km (1.9 miles), you'll arrive at Gem Lake, situated at an elevation of about 1,200 meters (3,937 feet). This serene lake is surrounded by towering peaks and offers a perfect spot for a longer break.### Gem Lake to Wright MountainFrom Gem Lake, the trail becomes less defined as you make your way towards Wright Mountain. This section is more challenging, with a significant elevation gain of around 500 meters (1,640 feet) over the next 4 km (2.5 miles). The path is rocky and requires careful navigation, so using HiiKER for accurate trail mapping is highly recommended.### Reaching the SummitAs you approach the summit of Wright Mountain, the trail opens up to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Cascade Range. At an elevation of approximately 1,800 meters (5,905 feet), the summit offers a rewarding 360-degree vista, including views of Mount Rainier and the Snoqualmie Pass. This is a perfect spot to take in the natural beauty and enjoy a well-deserved rest.### Flora and FaunaThroughout the hike, you'll traverse through diverse ecosystems, from dense forests of Douglas fir and western hemlock to alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers. Wildlife is abundant, with chances to spot black bears, mountain goats, and a variety of bird species. Always practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve this pristine environment.### Historical SignificanceThe Alpine Lakes Wilderness, established in 1976, is rich in history. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Snoqualmie and Yakama, who used these trails for hunting and gathering. The region's mining history is also evident, with remnants of old mining equipment occasionally visible along the trail.### Return JourneyThe return journey follows the same path back to the trailhead, offering a different perspective on the stunning landscapes you passed earlier. The total distance for this out-and-back trail is around 17 km (10.6 miles), with an overall elevation gain of approximately 1,300 meters (4,265 feet).Prepare adequately with proper hiking gear, plenty of water, and snacks.
