โEmbark on a breathtaking 17 km loop through lush forests, serene lakes, and panoramic mountain views.โ
Starting your adventure near Clallam County, Washington, the trailhead for this loop is conveniently accessible by car. If you're using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the town of Port Angeles, from where you can catch a local bus or arrange a taxi to the trailhead.### Initial Ascent and Badger ValleyThe journey begins with a steady ascent through lush forested areas, gaining approximately 1200 meters (3937 feet) in elevation over the course of the hike. The first section takes you through Badger Valley, a serene area known for its dense vegetation and the occasional sighting of black-tailed deer. The trail here is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have HiiKER on hand for navigation.### Grand LakeAt around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll reach Grand Lake. This picturesque lake is a perfect spot for a short break. The clear waters reflect the surrounding peaks, creating a stunning backdrop for photos. Keep an eye out for the resident bird species, including the American dipper and various types of woodpeckers.### Gladys LakeContinuing on, the trail leads you to Gladys Lake, approximately 8 km (5 miles) into the hike. This lake is slightly smaller than Grand Lake but equally beautiful. The area around Gladys Lake is rich in wildflowers during the summer months, making it a vibrant and colorful stop. The trail here can be a bit rocky, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.### Lillian RidgeThe next significant section is the ascent to Lillian Ridge. This part of the trail is more challenging, with steeper inclines and rocky terrain. However, the effort is well worth it. At the top, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The ridge itself is a great place to spot marmots and, if you're lucky, a golden eagle soaring above.### Historical SignificanceThe region around this trail has a rich history. It was originally inhabited by the Klallam and Makah tribes, who used the area for hunting and gathering. The diverse ecosystem provided them with ample resources, and you can still see evidence of their presence in the form of ancient trails and campsites.### Wildlife and FloraThroughout the hike, you'll encounter a variety of wildlife. Black bears are known to inhabit the area, so carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it is essential. The flora is equally diverse, with old-growth forests, alpine meadows, and a variety of wildflowers depending on the season.### Final Descent and ReturnThe final section of the loop takes you back down through forested areas, eventually returning to the trailhead. This descent can be quite steep in places, so trekking poles can be very helpful. The entire loop is around 17 km (10.5 miles), making for a full day of hiking.Using HiiKER for navigation will ensure you stay on track and can fully enjoy the natural beauty and historical significance of this remarkable trail.
