The Hike Itself Embarking on the Anthony Creek Trail, you'll initially follow a path that runs alongside Anthony Creek. This section is relatively gentle, with the soothing sounds of the creek accompanying you as you begin your ascent. After about 3.5 km (2.2 miles), you'll reach the junction with the Bote Mountain Trail, where you'll take a sharp left turn to continue your climb.
As you ascend Bote Mountain Trail, the environment changes, and the forest becomes denser. The trail gets steeper here, and you'll gain a significant amount of elevation over the next 3 km (1.9 miles). At approximately 6.5 km (4 miles) from the start, you'll reach the famous Appalachian Trail (AT) junction at Spence Field. This highland meadow offers a great spot to rest and enjoy the panoramic views.
Turning east onto the AT, you'll hike along the ridge with breathtaking vistas on either side. The trail here can be rocky and uneven, so watch your footing. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll reach the summit of Rocky Top, one of the three peaks of Thunderhead Mountain. The views from Rocky Top are spectacular, providing a 360-degree panorama of the Smokies, including Cades Cove and Fontana Lake.
Flora, Fauna, and Landmarks Throughout the hike, you'll encounter a variety of flora, including hardwood forests, rhododendron, and mountain laurel.
