A beautifully historic journey, the Kelly Basin Trail is a 7 mi out-and-back trail that starts and ends at the end of Kelly Basin Road, Macquarie Harbour Historic Site, Tasmania. Follow the trail, graded as Medium and usually completed in 3 – 4 hours, over the Bird River bridge, and meander along the old railway track through lush green rainforest, with some sections of single forest path and bushwalking to the historic Kelly Basin. Named after Tasmanian coastal explorer James Kelly, it’s where the bustling port town of East Pilinger once stood in the 1900s. Relics of the railway and evidence of the once 1000-strong town can be spotted along the trail in-between and under the overtaking mosses and ferns. (For information on how we grade trails, please click here, and caution is advised on trail times as this depends on multiple variables. For more info, click here.) A fascinating, picturesque trail that takes you back in time within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Family-friendly and suitable for most abilities and fitness levels, with some bushwalking involved on this relatively flat railway track. Be prepared for mud and take appropriate boots or waterproof shoes. Dogs are not allowed in the reserves and national parks of Tasmania for the protection of wildlife. Photo Credit :JarrahTree
