The Mount Maunganui Track or ‘The Mauao Summit Track’ as it’s also known, is a medium 6.4 km circuit near the coastal city of Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand’s North Island. A popular track, it’s not for those looking for solitude but the views from the top of Mount Maunganui are worth the effort for the far-reaching vistas across Tauranga and out to sea, where you can also spot seals along the coastline. Many make the short but steep climb with plenty of steps to the summit for sunrise. There is an alternative route up or down on a gravel track but a steep gradient makes it slippery when wet, and other tracks around the mount for anyone looking to avoid the leg-burner walk to the top. An exposed track, be sure to be prepared with sun protection during the summer months and extra layers year-round in case of changeable coastal weather conditions. Amenities nearby include parking, although this can be limited during busy periods, toilets near the start of the trail, water at the base close to the surf club, as well as cafés and restaurants. Based on our data, the trail is graded as medium. For information on how we grade trails, please click here. Also, check our latest community posts for trail updates.
