An out and back trail in the Kahurangi National Park, the track begins from the route leading from Upper Takaka to the Cobb Reservoir, on the Cobb Dam Road. This is a narrow road and is often prone to ice and snow in the winter so caution is advised as are four wheel drive vehicles. The 5 km trail meanders up through a beech forest before flattening off as the forest ends and the open hills begin. A great family walk, it is rated as easy. For information on how we grade trails, please click here. The trail takes about two hours to complete, the end point being Sylvester Hut, although caution is advised on trail times as this depends on multiple variables. For more info, click here. Return is via the same track although a night can be spent in Sylvester Hut, which has 12 bunk beds, heating and mattresses, although water should be boiled. Bookings are not required; it is a first come first served basis. Dogs are not permitted on this trail.
