The Lake Marian Track is a 6 km out and back route located near Glenorchy, in the Otago region, in the South Island of New Zealand. Park at the Lake Marian car park, found along Hollyford Road off Milford Road (SH94) at Marian Corner, close to Milford Sound. The track crosses a swinging bridge and follows a series of waterfalls as it makes a steady climb towards the mountainous Lake Marian within the Hanging Valley. After the falls there are more challenging sections where the oath becomes steep and muddy after rainfall. Often surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the glacial lake in the middle of New Zealand’s Fjordland is beautiful year-round, rewarding hikers with mirror-like reflections on the calmest days. There are seasonal restrictions here due to the alpine region and hikers are warned not to walk the track during snow and avalanche season in spring and winter. For any hikers wanting to continue past the waterfalls, a good level of fitness is advised, as well as confident navigational and remote survival skills.
