A loop trail of 66.2 km, the hike traverses varied volcanic landscapes and alpine country on the flanks of Mount Ruapehu, an active volcano in the Tongariro National Park. It is classed as an advanced trail, for information on how we grade trails, please click here and can be hiked in either direction, although recent and forecast rainfall should be considered when choosing the route as there are unbridged river crossings. There are six huts and campsites available on this route, although in the busy season Waihohonu Hut and Campsite will need booking beforehand. All others are on a first come first served basis. Camping outside of the designated camp areas is permitted, except within 500 m of the Tongariro Northern Circuit Track and 200 m of the Round the mountain Track. Expect the whole circuit to take between four and six days, although caution is advised on trail times as this depends on multiple variables. For more info, click here. Dogs are not permitted in the National Park.
