The Maude Peak via Mangorei Track is a 12.7 km out and back walk within the Egmont National Park, located near Oakura, a township in the North Island of New Zealand. This track leads to the summit of Maude Peak at 1220 m which on clear days offers spectacular views of Mount Taranaki and the surrounding peaks. Trampers can extend the walk if they wish to reach the next summit of Henry Peak at 1224 m by continuing along the ridgeline. The route is predominantly boardwalk and starts from the Mangorei Track trailhead and leads towards the Pouakai Hut, taking a left turn to follow the Pouakai Track which leads to Maude Peak. On route to Maude Peak you’ll pass the Pouakai Circuit Reflective Tarn, stop here to take the iconic photo of perfectly formed stratovolcano Mount Taranaki, where on a still, clear day, you can capture mirror-like reflections in the reflective pools. Trails within alpine regions should never be underestimated and changeable mountainous weather systems mean hikers should always be prepared with extra layers and a wind/waterproof jacket, plenty of food and water. For those wanting to stay in the Pouakai Hut, bookings are required, and the basic facilities include 16 bunks, mattresses, heating, non-flush toilets and untreated water (boiling is recommended). https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/taranaki/places/egmont-national-park/things-to-do/huts/pouakai-hut/ Based on our data, the trail is graded as medium.
