Sulten, Sultensattel and Kampenwand-Innerer Ostgipfel Loop

Starting near the picturesque town of Rosenheim, Germany, this 12 km (7.5 miles) loop trail offers a moderately challenging hike with an elevation gain of approximately 900 meters (2,950 feet). The trailhead is easily accessible by car or public transport. If driving, you can park near the Kampenwandbahn cable car station. For those using public transport, take a train to Aschau im Chiemgau and then a bus to the Kampenwandbahn stop.

### Initial Ascent and Sulten

The hike begins with a steady ascent through lush forests, where you’ll be surrounded by a variety of flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for deer and various bird species that inhabit this region. After about 3 km (1.9 miles) and an elevation gain of 300 meters (985 feet), you’ll reach the Sulten, a scenic viewpoint offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains.

### Sultensattel and Alpine Meadows

Continuing from Sulten, the trail leads you to Sultensattel, a saddle point that sits at an elevation of around 1,200 meters (3,937 feet). This section is approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) from Sulten and involves another 200 meters (656 feet) of elevation gain. Here, the landscape opens up to beautiful alpine meadows, where you can spot wildflowers in the spring and summer months. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the serene environment.

### Kampenwand-Innerer Ostgipfel

The next segment of the trail takes you towards the Kampenwand-Innerer Ostgipfel, the inner eastern peak of the Kampenwand mountain. This part of the hike is the most challenging, with a steep ascent of about 400 meters (1,312 feet) over a distance of 3 km (1.9 miles). The effort is well worth it, as the summit offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the Bavarian Alps and the Chiemsee lake. On clear days, you can even see as far as the Austrian Alps.

### Descent and Return Loop

From the summit, the trail descends back towards the starting point. The descent is gradual and takes you through a mix of rocky paths and forested areas. This section is about 4 km (2.5 miles) long and brings you back to the Kampenwandbahn cable car station. Along the way, you’ll pass by several historical landmarks, including old alpine huts that date back to the 19th century, offering a glimpse into the region’s pastoral history.
