If driving, head towards the A592 road near Ullswater, where you can find parking near the National Trust Aira Force car park. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the town of Penrith. From Penrith, you can take a bus towards Glenridding and alight at the Aira Force stop, which is a short walk from the trailhead.### Trail Overview The trail begins near the Aira Force car park, a popular starting point due to its proximity to the stunning Aira Force waterfall. The first section of the trail takes you through lush woodland, where you can enjoy the sound of cascading water and the sight of ancient trees. This part of the trail is relatively gentle, allowing you to ease into the hike.### Aira Force Waterfall Approximately 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you will encounter Aira Force, a 65-foot (20-meter) waterfall that is one of the highlights of the trail. The waterfall is surrounded by a picturesque landscape, making it a perfect spot for photography. There are several viewing platforms where you can take in the beauty of the falls.### Ascending Gowbarrow Fell After leaving Aira Force, the trail begins to ascend more steeply as you make your way up Gowbarrow Fell. The climb is steady but manageable, with the path winding through open fellside and offering increasingly expansive views of Ullswater and the surrounding fells. Keep an eye out for red squirrels and a variety of bird species that inhabit this area.### Summit Views Reaching the summit of Gowbarrow Fell, at approximately 3.5 km (2.2 miles) into the hike, you are rewarded with panoramic views of Ullswater, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Lake District. On a clear day, you can see as far as Helvellyn and the surrounding peaks. This is an excellent spot to take a break and enjoy the scenery.### Historical Significance Gowbarrow Fell has historical significance, as it was once part of the estate owned by the Duke of Norfolk. The area is also associated with the famous poet William Wordsworth, who was inspired by the natural beauty of Ullswater and its surroundings. Wordsworth's sister, Dorothy, wrote about their visits to Aira Force in her journals.### Descending Back The descent from Gowbarrow Fell is gradual and takes you through more open fellside and eventually back into woodland.
