This loop trail is rated medium in difficulty, making it suitable for hikers with a moderate level of fitness and some experience in hill walking.### Getting There To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Threlkeld, which is easily accessible via the A66 road. From Penrith, you can catch a bus to Threlkeld, with services running regularly.### Trail Overview The trail begins near the village of Threlkeld, where you can find parking facilities. As you set off, the initial part of the trail is relatively gentle, allowing you to warm up before the more strenuous sections. The path soon starts to ascend, offering stunning views of the surrounding Lake District National Park.### Ascent to Blencathra The climb to Blencathra, also known as Saddleback, is the most challenging part of the hike. The ascent is steep and rocky, requiring careful footing. As you gain elevation, the views become increasingly spectacular, with panoramic vistas of the surrounding fells and valleys. The summit of Blencathra stands at 868 meters (2,848 feet), providing a rewarding vantage point.### Landmarks and Wildlife Along the way, you’ll encounter several notable landmarks. One of the most famous is Sharp Edge, a narrow arête that offers a thrilling, albeit challenging, route to the summit. However, this section is not recommended for those with a fear of heights or in adverse weather conditions. For a safer alternative, you can take the Scales Fell route, which is less exposed but equally scenic. The area is rich in wildlife, with chances to spot red deer, peregrine falcons, and various species of wildflowers, especially in the spring and summer months. Keep an eye out for the native Herdwick sheep, a hardy breed that grazes the fells.### Historical Significance Blencathra has a rich history, with its name deriving from the Old Norse "Blenk" meaning "top" and "athra" meaning "seat." The mountain has been a significant landmark for centuries, featuring in local folklore and literature. The nearby village of Threlkeld itself has historical roots dating back to the medieval period, with its charming stone cottages and ancient church.### Descent and Return The descent from Blencathra is less strenuous but still requires caution, especially in wet conditions. The path loops back towards Threlkeld, passing through picturesque landscapes and offering a different perspective of the area. The final stretch is a gentle walk back to the village, where you can relax and perhaps visit a local pub for a well-deserved meal.### Navigation For navigation, it’s highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on the right path. This is particularly useful in the Lake District, where weather conditions can change rapidly, and visibility can be reduced. This loop trail offers a perfect blend of physical challenge, natural beauty, and historical intrigue, making it a must-do for any avid hiker visiting the Lake District.
