As you climb, you'll pass through lush woodlands and open fields, offering a variety of flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for native species such as roe deer, foxes, and a plethora of birdlife including woodpeckers and nuthatches.About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Box Hill Fort, a significant historical landmark. Built in the late 19th century as part of the London Defence Scheme, the fort was intended to protect the capital from potential invasion. Although it never saw combat, the fort remains a fascinating relic of military history. Take a moment to explore the area and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.### Woodland Trails and Stepping Stones Continuing on, the trail meanders through dense woodlands, where the canopy provides a cool respite on warmer days. The path can be uneven and muddy, especially after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark, you'll encounter the famous Box Hill Stepping Stones.
