Starting your hike near the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, England, the High Knowl Wood Loop offers a delightful 4 km (approximately 2.5 miles) journey through picturesque woodlands and gentle rolling hills. With an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet), this loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to the nearest known address: Windsor Great Park, Windsor SL4 2HT, UK. There is ample parking available near the park entrance. For those using public transport, take a train to Windsor & Eton Central Station. From there, you can catch a local bus or taxi to Windsor Great Park.

As you embark on the High Knowl Wood Loop, you'll be greeted by a canopy of ancient oak and beech trees. The trail meanders through dense woodlands, offering a serene escape from urban life. Approximately 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter a charming wooden bridge crossing a small brook. This is a great spot for a brief rest and some nature photography.
The woodlands are home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species such as woodpeckers and owls. During spring and summer, the forest floor is carpeted with bluebells and wildflowers, adding a splash of color to your hike.
The area around Windsor and Maidenhead is steeped in history. Windsor Great Park, adjacent to the trail, has been a royal hunting ground since the time of William the Conqueror. As you hike, you may come across remnants of ancient boundary markers and old stone walls, hinting at the land's storied past.
At around the 2 km (1.2 miles) mark, you'll reach the highest point of the trail, offering a modest elevation gain of 100 meters (328 feet). From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, including glimpses of Windsor Castle in the distance on a clear day.
The descent from the high point is gradual, leading you back through more open woodland and eventually looping back to the starting point. Along the way, you'll pass by a small pond, often frequented by ducks and other waterfowl, providing a peaceful end to your hike.
