Solent Way

The Solent Way is a captivating coastal walk that stretches approximately 102 kilometers (about 63 miles) along the Hampshire coastline in England, offering a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 600 meters (roughly 1970 feet). This point-to-point trail begins near Milford on Sea, a charming village known for its picturesque views and tranquil atmosphere.

Getting to the Trailhead To start your journey on the Solent Way, you can reach the trailhead by public transport or car. If you're traveling by train, the nearest station is New Milton, from which you can take a short bus or taxi ride to Milford on Sea. For those driving, parking is available in the village, allowing you to leave your vehicle and embark on the trail.

Milford on Sea to Lymington The trail kicks off near the coastal defenses at Milford on Sea, where you'll be greeted by the sight of the Isle of Wight across the water. As you make your way towards Lymington, a historic port town approximately 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) away, you'll pass by the Keyhaven Marshes, a haven for birdwatchers with its rich variety of wading birds and wildfowl.

Lymington to Beaulieu Continuing from Lymington, the trail meanders through the New Forest National Park, leading you to Beaulieu, about 16 kilometers (10 miles) further. This section is characterized by its lush woodlands and open heathlands. Beaulieu is renowned for the Beaulieu River and the National Motor Museum, a testament to the area's historical significance.

Beaulieu to Hamble As you progress from Beaulieu to Hamble, covering roughly 23 kilometers (14.3 miles), the path takes you alongside the Beaulieu River and through the Royal Victoria Country Park. The park is home to the remains of the Royal Victoria Military Hospital, a poignant historical site.

Hamble to Portsmouth The trail then leads you to the vibrant city of Portsmouth, approximately 32 kilometers (20 miles) away. This stretch includes a ferry crossing from Warsash to Hamble-le-Rice, adding a nautical twist to your hike. Portsmouth is steeped in maritime history, with landmarks such as the historic dockyard and the iconic Spinnaker Tower.

Portsmouth to Southsea and Beyond From Portsmouth, the Solent Way takes you along the seafront to Southsea, where you can enjoy classic seaside attractions. The trail continues eastward, offering views of the Solent strait and passing by the natural beauty of Hayling Island before reaching its conclusion at Emsworth.
