Starting near the picturesque village of New Cheriton in Hampshire, England, the Itchen Way trail stretches approximately 21 km (13 miles) to the historic city of Winchester. This point-to-point trail offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet), making it suitable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness.
#### New Cheriton to Tichborne (0-5 km / 0-3 miles) Starting from New Cheriton, the trail heads south towards the village of Tichborne. This section is relatively flat and passes through lush meadows and farmland. Keep an eye out for the Tichborne House, a historic manor with roots dating back to the 12th century.
#### Tichborne to Itchen Stoke (5-10 km / 3-6 miles) As you continue, the trail follows the river more closely, offering stunning views of the water and surrounding countryside. This section includes a gentle ascent, gaining about 50 meters (164 feet) in elevation. The village of Itchen Stoke is a great place to take a break and explore the Itchen Stoke Church, known for its unique architecture.
#### Itchen Stoke to Avington Park (10-15 km / 6-9 miles) This part of the trail takes you through the heart of the Itchen Valley, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its rich biodiversity. You’ll pass through water meadows and might spot kingfishers, otters, and various species of dragonflies. Avington Park, a grand 17th-century mansion, is a highlight of this section.
#### Avington Park to Winchester (15-21 km / 9-13 miles) The final stretch leads you towards Winchester, with a gradual descent of about 50 meters (164 feet). As you approach the city, the landscape transitions from rural to urban. Winchester itself is steeped in history, being the ancient capital of England. The trail ends near Winchester Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in Europe and a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
