“Embark on a historic and picturesque 11-km coastal hike through Dorset's diverse landscapes and wildlife-rich cliffs.”
The Bindon Hill, Rings Hill and Lulworth Cove Loop is a scenic and moderately challenging hike located near Dorset, England. Spanning approximately 11 kilometers (about 6.8 miles) with an elevation gain of around 400 meters (roughly 1312 feet), this loop trail offers hikers a diverse experience with stunning coastal views, rolling hills, and historical sites.
To reach the trailhead, if you're coming by car, navigate to West Lulworth, Dorset, where you can find parking near Lulworth Cove. For those opting for public transport, the nearest train station is Wool, from which you can take a bus or taxi to Lulworth Cove, the starting point of the hike.
Starting from Lulworth Cove, a picturesque bay known for its unique geology and crystal-clear waters, the trail begins with a steep climb up the white chalky path of Bindon Hill. As you ascend, take a moment to look back and enjoy the panoramic views of the cove and the English Channel.
Continuing along the ridge of Bindon Hill, you'll be treated to an array of wildflowers and grasses, with the possibility of spotting butterflies and birds of prey. The path here can be narrow and uneven, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
As you traverse the top of Bindon Hill, you'll be walking through an area rich in history. The hill itself is home to an Iron Age hill fort, and the landscape is dotted with ancient burial mounds. The strategic position of the hill offers insights into its historical importance for defense and settlement.
After descending Bindon Hill, the trail leads to Rings Hill, where you'll encounter a more gentle terrain. The path meanders through farmland and pastures, offering a different perspective of the Dorset countryside.
Approaching the halfway mark, you'll reach the quaint village of West Lulworth, which is a perfect spot to rest and perhaps enjoy a meal or refreshment at a local pub or café.
The final stretch of the loop takes you back towards Lulworth Cove. This section of the trail can be steep as you navigate the descent, but the views of the cove's horseshoe shape are rewarding. Once back at the cove, take the time to explore the beach and the Lulworth Crumple, a geological fold that is part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.
Throughout the hike, keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that inhabits the area. The cliffs and grasslands are home to a variety of bird species, while the marine life in Lulworth Cove includes fish, crabs, and even dolphins if you're lucky.
Before setting out, ensure you have adequate water, sun protection, and layers for changing weather conditions. The trail can be exposed, so be prepared for windy conditions on the hilltops. Check the weather forecast and tide times, especially if you plan to explore the beach at Lulworth Cove.
