Starting near the picturesque village of Hartington in Derbyshire, England, the River Dove via Manifold Trail and Limestone Way offers a delightful loop hike of approximately 13 km (8 miles) with an elevation gain of around 300 meters (984 feet). This medium-difficulty trail is perfect for those looking to explore the natural beauty and historical richness of the Peak District.
#### Hartington to Beresford Dale Starting from Hartington, the trail initially takes you through Beresford Dale, a serene section of the River Dove. This area is known for its lush greenery and tranquil river views. Keep an eye out for kingfishers and dippers along the riverbanks. The path here is relatively flat, making for an easy start to your hike.
#### Wolfscote Dale As you continue, you'll enter Wolfscote Dale, where the landscape becomes more dramatic with limestone cliffs and rocky outcrops. This section offers some of the most stunning scenery along the trail. The elevation begins to increase here, so be prepared for a moderate climb. The flora changes as well, with more wildflowers and ferns adorning the path.
#### Milldale Approximately halfway through the hike, you'll reach the charming hamlet of Milldale. This is an excellent spot for a rest and perhaps a picnic by the river. The historic Viator's Bridge, a packhorse bridge dating back to medieval times, is a notable landmark here. The bridge is a testament to the area's long history of trade and travel.
#### Manifold Trail Leaving Milldale, the trail intersects with the Manifold Trail, a former railway line converted into a walking and cycling path. This section is relatively flat and easy, providing a nice contrast to the earlier climbs. The Manifold Trail is rich in industrial history, with remnants of old railway infrastructure visible along the way.
#### Limestone Way The final section of the hike takes you onto the Limestone Way, a long-distance footpath that traverses the White Peak area of the Peak District. This part of the trail offers expansive views of rolling hills and limestone plateaus. The path gradually ascends and descends, providing a moderate challenge as you make your way back towards Hartington.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
