Egremont Castle
The trail begins at the historic Egremont Castle, a Norman structure dating back to the 12th century. As you explore the ruins, you'll find remnants of the keep, curtain walls, and gatehouse, offering a glimpse into medieval life. The castle's elevated position provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, setting the stage for your hike.
River Ehen
From the castle, the trail descends gently towards the River Ehen. This section of the hike is particularly scenic, with the river meandering through lush meadows and woodlands. The River Ehen is known for its clear waters and is a habitat for various species of fish, including salmon and trout. Keep an eye out for kingfishers and herons, which are often seen along the riverbanks.
Flora and Fauna
As you continue along the river, you'll pass through diverse ecosystems. The woodlands are home to oak, ash, and birch trees, providing a habitat for a variety of birds and small mammals. In the spring and summer, the meadows burst into color with wildflowers such as bluebells, primroses, and foxgloves. This section of the trail is relatively flat, making it an easy and enjoyable walk.
Navigation and Safety
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, offering detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course. While the trail is rated as medium difficulty, it's important to wear sturdy footwear, especially after rain, as some sections can become muddy and slippery.
