โExplore Cornwall's stunning coast and rich history on the scenic, moderately challenging Porth Mear Cove Loop.โ
Starting near the picturesque village of St. Eval in Cornwall, England, the Porth Mear Cove National Trust Loop is a delightful 4 km (2.5 miles) trail that offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of approximately 100 meters (328 feet). This loop trail is perfect for those looking to experience the natural beauty and historical richness of the Cornish coast.### Getting There To reach the trailhead, you can drive to St. Eval, which is well-signposted from the A39. There is a small car park near the trailhead. If you prefer public transport, the nearest major bus stop is in Newquay, from where you can take a local bus to St. Eval. The bus services are fairly regular, but it's advisable to check the latest schedules.### Trail Overview The trail begins near the St. Eval Church, a historical landmark dating back to the 12th century. From here, you'll head west towards the coast, passing through lush meadows and farmland. The initial part of the trail is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging sections ahead.### Coastal Path and Porth Mear Cove At around the 1 km (0.6 miles) mark, you'll reach the coastal path. Here, the trail starts to ascend gradually, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Keep an eye out for seabirds such as puffins and razorbills, which are commonly seen in this area. The coastal path is well-maintained but can be narrow and rocky in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended. As you approach Porth Mear Cove, approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter a steep descent down to the cove itself. This secluded beach is a hidden gem, perfect for a short break. The cove is surrounded by rugged cliffs and is a great spot for rock pooling and observing marine life.### Historical Significance The area around Porth Mear Cove is steeped in history. During World War II, the cliffs were used as lookout points, and you can still see remnants of old military installations. The cove was also a popular spot for smugglers in the 18th century, adding an element of intrigue to your hike.### Return Loop After exploring the cove, the trail loops back inland. This section involves a moderate climb, gaining about 50 meters (164 feet) in elevation over the next 1 km (0.6 miles). The path takes you through a mix of heathland and woodland, offering a different but equally beautiful landscape compared to the coastal section.### Final Stretch The last 1 km (0.6 miles) of the trail is relatively flat and takes you back to St. Eval. Along the way, you'll pass by traditional Cornish hedgerows and might even spot some local wildlife such as rabbits and foxes. The trail ends back at the St. Eval Church, where you can take a moment to appreciate the historical architecture before heading back.### Navigation For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates to ensure you stay on the right path. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience. This loop trail offers a perfect blend of coastal scenery, historical landmarks, and diverse landscapes, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast exploring Cornwall.
