For those using public transport, the nearest train station is in Penzance, about 11 km (7 miles) away. From Penzance, you can take a bus to Porthleven, which runs regularly and drops you off close to the starting point.### Trail Highlights and Navigation The trail begins in Porthleven, a charming fishing village known for its vibrant harbor and historic architecture. As you set off, you'll follow the South West Coast Path (SWCP), which is well-marked and easy to navigate. For precise navigation, consider using the HiiKER app to stay on track.### Loe Bar Around 3 km (1.9 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Loe Bar, a natural shingle bank separating the freshwater Loe Pool from the sea. This area is steeped in legend, with tales of King Arthur and the lost land of Lyonesse. The bar itself is a striking sight, with the tranquil pool on one side and the crashing waves of the Atlantic on the other.### Dollar Cove Continuing along the SWCP, you'll arrive at Dollar Cove, approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) from the start. This cove is named after the silver dollars that were supposedly washed ashore from a shipwreck in the 18th century. The rocky beach and clear waters make it a great spot for a break and some exploration.### Flora and Fauna The trail is rich in biodiversity. Keep an eye out for coastal birds such as cormorants and oystercatchers. The surrounding heathland is home to a variety of wildflowers, especially in the spring and summer months. You might also spot seals basking on the rocks or dolphins playing in the surf.### Historical Significance The area around Loe Bar has a deep historical significance. Loe Pool was once a navigable estuary, but over time, the bar formed, cutting it off from the sea. The pool and surrounding land were part of the Penrose Estate, which has been owned by the National Trust since the 1970s. The estate's history dates back to the Domesday Book, and remnants of its past can be seen in the landscape.### Final Stretch As you loop back towards Porthleven, the trail takes you through lush woodlands and open fields, offering a different perspective of the Cornish countryside. The final 3 km (1.9 miles) are relatively gentle, allowing you to soak in the views and reflect on the diverse landscapes you've traversed. This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a must-do for any hiking enthusiast visiting Cornwall.
