Horsetooth Falls and Stout Loop Trail

Getting to the Trailhead

The Hike

Horsetooth Falls

Approximately 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Horsetooth Falls, a scenic waterfall that cascades into a small pool below. This is a popular spot to take a break and enjoy the sound of the water, especially during the spring runoff when the falls are at their most impressive.

Stout Loop

Continuing on, the trail begins to ascend more steeply as you approach the Stout Loop section. Here, you'll gain most of the elevation, and the terrain becomes rockier. As you climb, take time to admire the expansive views of Horsetooth Reservoir and the Great Plains to the east. The trail will loop around, offering different perspectives of the landscape, including unique rock formations and the higher peaks of the Rockies to the west.

The area is rich in history, with the name "Horsetooth" itself being a reference to one of the prominent rock formations that is said to resemble a horse's tooth.
