“Embark on a scenic trek through meadows, forests, and rocky ascents at Colorado's Horsetooth Falls and Stout Loop Trail.”
Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the Horsetooth Falls and Stout Loop Trail offers an immersive experience into the rugged landscape near Larimer County, Colorado. This loop trail, approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) in length with an elevation gain of around 500 meters (1640 feet), provides a moderately challenging hike that is accessible to those with a reasonable level of fitness.
Getting to the Trailhead
The trailhead is conveniently located just west of Fort Collins. If you're driving, take Harmony Road west from Fort Collins; it will turn into County Road 38E. Continue around the south end of Horsetooth Reservoir, and you'll find the parking area for Horsetooth Mountain Open Space on your right. There is a fee to park here, so be prepared to pay at the kiosk. For those opting for public transport, check local schedules for buses that get you closest to the area, and then a taxi or rideshare might be necessary to reach the trailhead itself.
The Hike
As you embark on your hike, the trail will lead you through a variety of terrains, starting with a gentle incline through grassy meadows dotted with wildflowers in the spring and summer months. The path then weaves into a more forested area, where the shade of ponderosa pines provides a respite from the sun. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including mule deer, coyotes, and an array of bird species.
Horsetooth Falls
Approximately 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Horsetooth Falls, a scenic waterfall that cascades into a small pool below. This is a popular spot to take a break and enjoy the sound of the water, especially during the spring runoff when the falls are at their most impressive.
Stout Loop
Continuing on, the trail begins to ascend more steeply as you approach the Stout Loop section. Here, you'll gain most of the elevation, and the terrain becomes rockier. As you climb, take time to admire the expansive views of Horsetooth Reservoir and the Great Plains to the east. The trail will loop around, offering different perspectives of the landscape, including unique rock formations and the higher peaks of the Rockies to the west.
Historical Significance
The area is rich in history, with the name "Horsetooth" itself being a reference to one of the prominent rock formations that is said to resemble a horse's tooth. The region was historically inhabited by indigenous peoples, and later by settlers and ranchers. Evidence of this history can be seen along the trail, where old homesteads and fences hint at the area's past.
Preparation and Planning
Before setting out, make sure to check the weather conditions and prepare accordingly. The trail can be exposed, so sun protection is essential, and always carry plenty of water. It's also advisable to download the trail map onto your HiiKER app to ensure you have offline access to navigation, as cell service can be spotty.
Wildlife and Nature Conservation
As with any natural area, it's important to practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve the beauty and integrity of the environment. Stay on designated trails, pack out all trash, and observe wildlife from a distance.
By preparing properly and respecting the natural surroundings, your hike on the Horsetooth Falls and Stout Loop Trail will be a memorable adventure through one of Colorado's most picturesque landscapes.
