The Mount Sherman Trail from Iowa Gulch is a less traveled route to summit Mount Sherman, it's a 4.3 miles round trip hike with an elevation gain of 2,200 ft. This trail starts from the Iowa Gulch trailhead, which is located on the east side of the mountain. The trail begins by following the Fourmile Creek Trail, but after a short distance, it branches off to the left and into the Iowa Gulch. The first part of the trail is a gentle climb through a dense forest of pine and aspen trees. As you gain elevation, the trail becomes steeper and rockier and the scenery changes to a more alpine landscape with wildflowers and rocky outcroppings. The trail offers some great views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. After reaching the saddle between Mount Sherman and Mount Sheridan, the trail becomes steeper and more strenuous as you approach the summit. The final stretch to the summit requires some basic scrambling skills and a high level of fitness. The summit of Mount Sherman offers panoramic views of the Front Range and the surrounding mountains. It is important to note that this trail is less traveled than the standard Mount Sherman trail, so it may be harder to follow and may not be as well-maintained. It's a good idea to bring a map and compass, and to be familiar with the trail and the surrounding area. Also, hikers should be prepared for changing weather conditions and bring appropriate gear and clothing. It's important to bring plenty of water, as well as snacks and a lunch, as there are no water sources along the trail. It's also important to be aware of the altitude and its effects on the body, and be able to recognize signs of altitude sickness. For information on how we grade trails, please click here.
