Nestled in the heart of the Gunnison National Forest near Garfield County, Colorado, the West Elk Stock Driveway Trail offers hikers a chance to explore the rugged beauty of the West Elk Wilderness. This approximately 16 km (10 miles) loop trail, with an elevation gain of around 600 meters (nearly 2000 feet), provides a medium difficulty level that is suitable for hikers with some experience.
Getting There
To reach the trailhead, you can drive from the nearest town of Paonia, Colorado. From Paonia, head east on CO-133 S for about 15 km (9 miles) until you reach a turnoff for Forest Service Road 12, also known as Kebler Pass Road. Follow this road for approximately 32 km (20 miles) until you reach the trailhead, which is located on the right side of the road. There is a parking area where you can leave your car. Public transport options are limited in this area, so driving is the most feasible way to access the trailhead.
Trail Experience
As you embark on the West Elk Stock Driveway Trail, you'll be walking on paths once used by ranchers to move their livestock between summer and winter grazing grounds. The trail's historical significance as a stock driveway adds a layer of cultural heritage to your hike, as you imagine the echoes of the past with herders and cattle traversing these same paths.
The trail begins with a gentle incline through aspen groves, which are particularly stunning in the fall when the leaves turn a vibrant gold. The path then meanders through mixed conifer forests, where the scent of pine and the sound of rustling needles accompany your journey. Approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) in, you'll reach the first significant elevation gain, which offers a moderate challenge and leads to sweeping views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
Wildlife and Flora
Keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that inhabits the area, including elk, mule deer, and black bears. Birdwatchers will also delight in the variety of bird species, from the majestic golden eagle to the melodious hermit thrush. The trail is also home to a rich array of flora, from wildflowers to towering spruce and fir trees, which provide a lush canopy overhead.
Navigating the Trail
As you navigate the trail, using a navigation tool like HiiKER can help you stay on track and be aware of upcoming changes in terrain or elevation. The loop nature of the trail means that you'll end up back at the starting point without needing to retrace your steps, offering new scenery throughout the hike.
Preparation and Safety
Before setting out, ensure you're prepared with adequate water, food, and layers of clothing to adapt to the unpredictable mountain weather. It's also wise to carry a map, compass, and a fully charged phone with the HiiKER app downloaded for navigation. Let someone know your plans and expected return time, and be bear aware, carrying bear spray and knowing how to store food properly.
Trail Etiquette
As you enjoy the West Elk Stock Driveway Trail, remember to practice Leave No Trace principles. Stay on the designated path to protect the fragile ecosystem, pack out all trash, and be considerate of other hikers and wildlife.
