Modoc National Forest is located in the northeastern corner of California, USA. It spans over 1.6 million acres, offering a diverse landscape of mountains, forests, and high desert. Nearby towns include Alturas, the county seat of Modoc County, as well as Cedarville and Adin. The forest was established in 1904, and its history is rich with Native American heritage, particularly the Modoc people, after whom the forest is named. The area was also significant during the Modoc War of 1872-1873, a conflict between the Modoc tribe and the U.S. Army. Parking facilities in Modoc National Forest are ample, with several designated parking areas at trailheads and campgrounds. While most areas do not require a fee, some developed campgrounds may charge for parking. Visitors are encouraged to follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the natural beauty of the forest. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, pronghorn antelope, and the rare American marten. Birdwatchers might spot bald eagles, osprey, and various species of hawks. The diverse habitats support a wide range of flora, including ponderosa pine, juniper, and sagebrush. Unique vegetation such as the western juniper woodlands and high desert wildflowers add to the forest's ecological diversity. Notable features within the park include the Medicine Lake Highlands, a volcanic area with lava flows and cinder cones, and the South Warner Wilderness, offering stunning views and challenging hikes. The Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located nearby, is a significant site for migratory birds. Public transportation to Modoc National Forest is limited. Visitors typically access the forest by car, with the nearest major highways being U.S. Route 395 and State Route 299. For those without a vehicle, renting a car from nearby cities like Redding or Reno is a practical option. Photo Credit: USFS Region 5 and J. Stephen Conn
