Capitol Reef National Park is located in south-central Utah, United States, within the heart of red rock country. The park is known for its stunning cliffs, canyons, domes, and natural bridges that form along the Waterpocket Fold, a nearly 100-mile-long wrinkle in the Earth's crust. The closest towns are Torrey, which is about 8 miles from the park’s main entrance, and Hanksville, located about 30 miles to the east. Capitol Reef was established as a national monument in 1937 and became a national park on December 18, 1971. The park gets its name from white sandstone domes that resemble the U.S. Capitol building and the word “reef,” a term early settlers used for any rocky barrier. The area also has a rich history of Native American inhabitants, including the Fremont people, who left behind pictographs and petroglyphs, as well as Mormon settlers who established orchards and farms in the late 19th century. Parking is available at several locations within the park, including the visitor center, trailheads, and scenic overlooks. The parking areas can fill up quickly during peak season, especially near popular hikes such as Hickman Bridge and Capitol Gorge. There is a $20 entrance fee per vehicle, with options for annual passes. The park's wildlife includes mule deer, coyotes, mountain lions, and rock squirrels, along with a variety of birds such as the American kestrel, western tanager, and golden eagle. Reptiles like collared lizards and rattlesnakes are also common. The flora of Capitol Reef varies from desert plants like sagebrush and prickly pear cactus to riparian vegetation, including cottonwoods and willows along the Fremont River. The park is also famous for its historic orchards, where visitors can pick fruit in season. Notable features include the Waterpocket Fold, the Fremont River, and the Capitol Dome. Public transportation is not available to the park, so visitors typically arrive by car. Shuttle services are offered in nearby towns for those looking to explore the park.
