Popran National Park is located in New South Wales, Australia, approximately 50 km north of Sydney. It lies on the Central Coast, nestled between the Hawkesbury River and Glenworth Valley. The nearby towns include Gosford and Mangrove Mountain, making it a popular day-trip destination for Sydney residents. The park was established in 1994 and covers 3,970 hectares. It was created to protect the unique Hawkesbury sandstone environment, which includes diverse ecosystems ranging from coastal rainforests to open woodlands. This area has deep cultural significance for the local Aboriginal people, particularly the Darkinjung Nation, who have a long history in the region. Several Aboriginal rock art sites can be found within the park. Parking facilities in Popran National Park are relatively limited but adequate for visitors. There are two main parking areas: one at the Ironbark Picnic Area and another at Mount Olive Trail. Both parking spots are free, and visitors are advised to arrive early on weekends as spaces can fill up quickly. There are no parking fees, and basic amenities, such as picnic tables and restrooms, are available near the car parks. Popran National Park is home to a variety of native wildlife, including eastern grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies, and echidnas. Bird species such as wedge-tailed eagles, yellow-tailed black cockatoos, and lyrebirds are commonly seen, making the park a popular spot for birdwatchers. The park’s flora is dominated by dry sclerophyll forests, with species like Sydney red gums, angophoras, and banksias. Pockets of rainforest can also be found in the valleys. Key features of Popran include the scenic Popran Creek, lush valleys, and panoramic lookouts with views of the Hawkesbury River. There is no public transport directly to the park, so visitors will need to drive or join a tour to access it. Photo Credit: John Yurasek
