Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park is located in the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Marche regions of central Italy. Covering over 150,000 hectares, it is one of Italy’s largest national parks. The park spans the provinces of Teramo, L’Aquila, Pescara, Ascoli Piceno, and Rieti. Nearby cities include Teramo, L’Aquila, and Ascoli Piceno, along with smaller towns like Castel del Monte and Santo Stefano di Sessanio. The park was officially established in 1991, though its rugged terrain has been a natural preserve for centuries. Historically, it served as a boundary between different regions of Italy and was part of important trade routes. The area also holds significant cultural and historical sites, including medieval villages and ancient hermitages. Parking is available in various areas around the park, with dedicated lots near key trailheads and visitor centers. There are around 10 main parking areas, and parking fees may vary depending on the location, with some spots offering free parking and others requiring a small fee, especially during peak tourist seasons. The park is home to diverse wildlife, including the Apennine wolf, Marsican brown bear, and chamois. Bird species such as the golden eagle and peregrine falcon are also common. The unique flora includes beech forests, high-altitude meadows, and rare plants like the edelweiss. Notable landmarks within the park include the Gran Sasso massif, home to Corno Grande, the highest peak in the Apennines. Other highlights are the Calderone Glacier, Europe's southernmost glacier, and Lake Campotosto. Public transport options are available, with buses connecting major cities like L’Aquila and Teramo to the park’s main entrances, although having a car is recommended for easier access.
