Pollino National Park is located in southern Italy, spanning the regions of Calabria and Basilicata. It is the largest national park in Italy, covering approximately 1,920 square kilometers. The park is nestled within the Pollino Massif, part of the southern Apennines. Nearby towns and cities include Castrovillari, Morano Calabro, and Rotonda, which serve as gateways to the park. The park was established in 1993 to protect the unique biodiversity and natural landscapes of the region. Historically, the area has been inhabited since ancient times, with evidence of Greek and Roman settlements. Today, Pollino National Park is recognized for its cultural and natural significance, drawing visitors interested in both history and nature. Parking facilities within the park are ample, with several parking areas near main entrances and popular trailheads. Most of the parking is free, though some sites near visitor centers or more tourist-heavy spots may charge a small fee. Parking regulations are in place to ensure that visitors park in designated areas to avoid damaging the environment. Pollino National Park is home to a variety of wildlife species. Notable animals include the Apennine wolf, the golden eagle, and the rare Italian roe deer. The park’s diverse habitats, from forests to high mountain areas, support numerous bird and mammal species. The park’s flora is equally impressive. One of the most iconic plant species in the park is the Bosnian pine, a rare and ancient tree that grows on the high mountain slopes. The lower altitudes are covered with beech and oak forests, while the meadows bloom with wildflowers, including orchids. Public transport to Pollino National Park is limited, but some buses connect the nearby towns to key points in the park. Alternatively, visitors often rent cars or take guided tours for easier access to the park’s more remote areas. Photo Credit: Brian Gratwicke
