Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park is located in northeastern Germany, in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The park covers a vast coastal area along the Baltic Sea, including the islands of Hiddensee, parts of Rügen, and the mainland areas near the towns of Barth and Stralsund. It stretches across about 805 square kilometers, making it one of Germany’s largest national parks. The park was established in 1990, shortly after German reunification, as part of efforts to protect the unique coastal ecosystems that had been preserved in the former East Germany. The park plays a crucial role in conserving the shallow lagoons (bodden), reed beds, and sand dunes that form one of the most significant wetland areas in Europe. Parking is available at various access points, including the towns of Prerow, Zingst, and Schaprode. There are around 20 parking areas in total, some with nominal fees, usually ranging from €3 to €6 per day. Parking areas are close to popular hiking trails and ferry points for those wishing to visit the islands. The park is a haven for birdwatchers, especially during the migration seasons in spring and autumn when tens of thousands of cranes and geese pass through the area. White-tailed eagles, ospreys, and various waterfowl are also common sights. The coastal waters and wetlands support populations of seals, including harbor and grey seals, and porpoises can sometimes be spotted. The park’s flora includes expansive reed beds, salt meadows, and dune vegetation. Notable plant species include sea buckthorn, coastal grasses, and a variety of wildflowers that bloom in the meadows. Significant landmarks include the iconic chalk cliffs of Rügen, the Darß Peninsula, and the Hiddensee Island, with its picturesque lighthouse. Public transport options include buses and ferries connecting towns like Stralsund and Zingst with the park, making it accessible for visitors without private vehicles. Ferries provide connections to Hiddensee and other island areas.
