Müritz National Park, located in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region of northeastern Germany, is one of the country’s largest national parks, spanning over 318 square kilometers. It sits between the towns of Waren and Neustrelitz, with smaller communities like Mirow and Rechlin nearby. The park was established in 1990, following the reunification of Germany, as part of efforts to protect the natural landscapes of the former East Germany. Müritz National Park offers several parking facilities, including dedicated parking areas near popular access points such as Waren, Federow, and Serrahn. In total, there are around 15 parking areas, with fees typically ranging from €2 to €5 per day. Visitors are encouraged to use designated lots to protect the park's natural environment. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including iconic species such as white-tailed eagles, osprey, red deer, and otters. The diversity of bird species makes it a haven for birdwatchers, particularly during migration seasons. Müritz's large lakes and wetlands also provide critical habitats for amphibians, fish, and a range of smaller mammals. In terms of flora, the park's landscapes include ancient beech forests, wetlands, and meadows. Notable vegetation includes European beech, oak, pine, and various wetland plants, contributing to the rich biodiversity. Key features of the park include Lake Müritz, Germany's second-largest lake, along with serene rivers and boglands. The beech forests in the Serrahn area are part of UNESCO’s Ancient Beech Forests World Heritage Site. Public transportation is available, with buses connecting the park to nearby towns, particularly from Waren and Neustrelitz, making it accessible for those without a car. The park also offers cycling and walking paths for visitors.
