Eifel National Park is located in western Germany, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Covering an area of about 110 square kilometers, the park lies within the Eifel mountain range, near the Belgian border. The nearby towns of Monschau, Schleiden, and Gemünd offer convenient access points to the park, while larger cities like Aachen and Cologne are situated to the north. The park was established in 2004 to protect the region’s forested landscapes, meadows, and unique biodiversity. Historically, parts of the area were used as military training grounds, and after years of ecological restoration, it has become a haven for wildlife and nature enthusiasts. Eifel National Park also preserves historical sites from the Second World War, including remnants of the Siegfried Line. Parking is available at various entrances to the park, including locations near Gemünd, Vogelsang, and Einruhr. There are over 10 designated parking areas, with fees generally around €3 to €5 per day. These parking areas are strategically located to give visitors easy access to popular hiking and cycling trails. The park is home to a rich variety of wildlife. Notable species include red deer, wildcats, and a wide range of bird species such as black storks and eagle owls. The park is also a key conservation area for endangered species like the European wildcat and several bat species. Eifel National Park’s flora includes dense beech and oak forests, alongside heathlands and meadows. The park is known for its colorful wildflower displays in spring and summer, including orchids, violets, and ferns. Notable features of the park include the Urft Dam, the scenic Rur Reservoir, and the former Vogelsang military training camp, now a visitor center and cultural site. Public transportation is available, with buses connecting the park to nearby towns like Schleiden and Monschau. Regional trains from Aachen and Cologne also provide access to nearby stations, making the park accessible for non-drivers.
