Gargano National Park is located in the southern region of Italy, in the province of Foggia, Apulia. It is situated on the Gargano Peninsula, often referred to as the "spur" of Italy's boot. The park covers about 1,200 square kilometers and is known for its diverse landscapes, which range from coastal areas to forests and mountains. Nearby cities and towns include Vieste, Monte Sant'Angelo, and Mattinata. Established in 1991, Gargano National Park was created to protect the region's unique biodiversity and landscapes. The park also encompasses several important historical and religious sites, including the Monte Sant'Angelo Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the centuries, the region has been shaped by various civilizations, leaving behind a rich cultural heritage. Parking facilities within the park are well-developed, especially near popular tourist destinations like the Foresta Umbra, Vieste, and the Tremiti Islands. Many of these parking areas are free, though some may require a fee during peak tourist seasons. Parking rules are generally straightforward, with designated areas to prevent damage to the park's ecosystems. Gargano National Park is home to a variety of wildlife species. Notable animals include the roe deer, wild boar, and the Italian wolf. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, with species such as peregrine falcons and golden eagles frequently spotted. The park's flora is equally impressive, with dense forests of beech, oak, and pine trees. The Foresta Umbra, a vast ancient forest, is a particular highlight. Additionally, Mediterranean scrubland, with species like myrtle and rosemary, is common along the coastal areas. Public transportation to the park is available, with buses connecting from nearby cities like Foggia and Manfredonia. Visitors can also reach the park by car or by ferry to the Tremiti Islands.
