Culgoa National Park is located in the far northwest of New South Wales, Australia, near the border with Queensland. The park lies within the semi-arid region of the Murray-Darling Basin, about 180 km north of Bourke and 120 km from the town of Lightning Ridge. The nearest settlement is the small town of Goodooga. Established in 1996, Culgoa National Park was created to preserve its unique floodplain ecosystems, which are vital to the survival of many plant and animal species in the region. Historically, the area has long been significant to the local Indigenous peoples, including the Murrawarri, who have maintained a strong cultural connection to the land. The park has basic parking facilities, mainly at the entrance points and camping areas, such as Culgoa River Campground. Parking is free throughout the park, and there are no formal fees for entry. However, camping is permitted only in designated areas, and visitors should come prepared, as facilities are minimal. Culgoa National Park is home to a variety of wildlife adapted to its harsh environment. Visitors may spot red kangaroos, emus, and the shy echidna. The park is also an important habitat for many bird species, including the black-breasted buzzard, Australian bustard, and mulga parrot, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers. The flora in Culgoa National Park is dominated by mulga woodlands, coolabah trees, and native grasses. The park’s floodplain areas are home to river red gums and lignum swamps, which support a variety of other plant and animal life during periods of flooding. Key features of the park include the Culgoa River, which runs through the park, providing a vital water source. The vast open landscapes and floodplains are a striking contrast to the red sands of the surrounding desert. Public transport to Culgoa is unavailable, and the park is best accessed by private vehicle, with four-wheel drive recommended due to the park’s remote and rugged terrain.
