Weddin Mountains National Park is located in New South Wales, Australia, approximately 400 kilometers west of Sydney. The park is part of the Central West region and is near the towns of Grenfell and Young. Covering over 8,000 hectares, it features rugged mountain ranges, forested slopes, and open woodlands, making it a haven for hikers, birdwatchers, and history enthusiasts. The park was established in 1971 to protect the unique flora and fauna of the region. Weddin Mountains also has a rich historical significance, as it was once a hideout for notorious Australian bushranger Ben Hall and his gang in the 1860s. Ben Hall's Cave, a key feature of the park, commemorates this part of Australian folklore. Parking is available at several designated areas, including the Holy Camp and Ben Halls Campground, which offer access to popular walking tracks and picnic areas. There are no entry fees to the park, and parking is free, though some areas may require driving on unsealed roads. Weddin Mountains National Park is home to a variety of wildlife, including eastern grey kangaroos, red-necked wallabies, and echidnas. The park is also a sanctuary for many bird species, such as wedge-tailed eagles, peregrine falcons, and glossy black cockatoos. Reptiles, including lace monitors and various snake species, are also found here. The flora of the park includes ironbark and red gum woodlands, cypress pines, and native grasses. The park is particularly vibrant in spring when wildflowers such as wattles, peas, and orchids bloom, adding color to the rugged landscape. Notable landmarks include Ben Hall’s Cave and Eualdrie Lookout, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding plains. Mount Ellis and the Basin Gully are other popular spots for bushwalking and exploring. Public transport options are limited, and the park is best accessed by private vehicle. It is a short drive from Grenfell, with roads leading into the park accessible by standard vehicles, though some tracks may require caution after rain. Photo Credit: M Cooper
