Kosciuszko National Park is located in southeastern New South Wales, Australia, and is part of the Australian Alps. It spans over 6,900 square kilometers, making it the largest national park in the state. The park is home to Mount Kosciuszko, the highest peak in Australia at 2,228 meters. Nearby towns include Jindabyne, Thredbo, and Cooma, which serve as access points to the park. Established in 1944, Kosciuszko National Park has a rich history linked to exploration, conservation, and recreation. The park was named after the Polish explorer Edmund Strzelecki, who named Mount Kosciuszko in honor of the Polish and American military leader Tadeusz Kościuszko. The park has since become a hub for outdoor activities, particularly skiing and snowboarding in winter and hiking and camping in summer. Parking facilities are available at multiple locations throughout the park, including at Thredbo, Perisher, Charlotte Pass, and near popular trailheads like the Mount Kosciuszko Summit Walk. Some areas require a parking or entry fee, especially during the peak winter season. Visitors are encouraged to park in designated areas to preserve the natural environment. Kosciuszko National Park is rich in wildlife, including the endangered corroboree frog, eastern grey kangaroos, wombats, and several species of birds, such as the wedge-tailed eagle and crimson rosella. In the alpine areas, visitors might spot unique creatures like the mountain pygmy possum. The park's flora ranges from alpine meadows with snow gums and heathlands to dense eucalyptus forests. Notable plant species include the snow daisy and alpine herb fields, which bloom spectacularly in summer. Key landmarks within the park include Mount Kosciuszko, the Snowy River, Blue Lake, and the Yarrangobilly Caves. Public transport options are limited, with bus services available to Jindabyne and Thredbo, but most visitors arrive by private vehicle.
