Morton National Park is located in the Southern Highlands and South Coast regions of New South Wales, Australia, about 160 kilometers southwest of Sydney. The park spans a large area, with nearby towns including Bundanoon, Kangaroo Valley, and Ulladulla, making it a popular destination for nature lovers from both the highlands and the coast. Established in 1938, Morton National Park is rich in both natural and cultural history. The park protects ancient Indigenous sites, including rock art and tools created by the Dharawal and Yuin people, who have lived in the area for thousands of years. The park was named after James Morton, a conservationist who advocated for the preservation of natural landscapes. Morton National Park has several parking areas at key locations, including Fitzroy Falls, Pigeon House Mountain, and Bundanoon. Parking fees apply at some of these sites, such as Fitzroy Falls, where visitors are required to pay a daily fee. The parking facilities are well-maintained and cater to both day visitors and campers. The park is home to diverse native wildlife, including eastern grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies, and lyrebirds. It is also a haven for birdwatchers, with species like the yellow-tailed black cockatoo and powerful owl making their home in the forested areas. Reptiles like lace monitors and water dragons can also be spotted. Morton National Park’s flora is equally diverse, with sclerophyll forests, heathlands, and rainforests. Common plant species include eucalyptus trees, waratahs, and banksias. In spring, wildflowers bloom across the landscape, creating vibrant displays. Notable features include Fitzroy Falls, Pigeon House Mountain (Didthul), and the impressive sandstone escarpments of the Budawang Ranges. Public transport options are limited, so visitors typically drive from nearby towns. The closest transport hub is in Moss Vale, which offers train and bus services to the region.
