Richmond Range National Park is located in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia. The park lies about 30 km northwest of Casino and 90 km southwest of Lismore. Covering around 15,000 hectares, it is part of the wider Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. Established in 1997, the park was created to protect its rich biodiversity, including ancient rainforests and rare ecosystems. The area has historical significance for the Githabul Aboriginal people, who have lived in the region for thousands of years. Several important cultural sites, including ceremonial grounds and rock art, are located within the park. Parking facilities are available at key access points, including the Cambridge Plateau picnic area and the Peacock Creek campground. There are no fees for parking, and basic amenities like picnic tables, barbecues, and restrooms are available at these locations. However, the park’s remote nature means that visitors should come prepared with their own supplies, as shops and services are distant. Richmond Range National Park is home to a variety of native wildlife, including the endangered Richmond Range snail, red-legged pademelon, and the powerful owl. Birdwatchers can spot species like the paradise riflebird, regent bowerbird, and the satin bowerbird. The park’s diverse habitats also support reptiles like lace monitors and carpet pythons. The flora of the park is equally diverse, with subtropical rainforests, dry sclerophyll forests, and tall eucalypt forests. Tree species such as the hoop pine, rosewood, and Sydney blue gum are common, along with an understorey rich in ferns and vines. Key features of the park include the Cambridge Plateau, which offers panoramic views, and the rainforest walks leading to pristine creeks and waterfalls. There is no public transport to the park, so visitors must use private vehicles or join guided tours from nearby towns. Photo Credit: J Atkins
