Mount Field National Park is located in Tasmania, Australia, approximately 64 kilometers northwest of Hobart. Situated within the state's Central Highlands, it is surrounded by towns such as New Norfolk, Westerway, and Maydena. The park is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, offering visitors a remarkable blend of natural beauty and history. Established in 1916, Mount Field is one of Tasmania’s oldest national parks. Its early protection was driven by a desire to preserve its stunning natural landscapes, and it has since become a cherished destination for locals and tourists alike. Parking at Mount Field National Park is convenient, with two main parking areas. The first is located at the park's visitor center, and the second, at Lake Dobson, is higher up the mountain. Parking is free, but entry to the park requires a national parks pass, which can be purchased online or at the visitor center. The park is home to an array of native wildlife, including the eastern quoll, echidnas, Tasmanian pademelons, and wombats. Birdwatchers will find species like the pink robin and the endemic green rosella. During cooler months, the park’s high-altitude areas provide a habitat for the Tasmanian snow gum, while lower altitudes are adorned with towering swamp gums and the ancient tree ferns. Notable features of Mount Field include Russell Falls, a cascading waterfall framed by lush greenery, and Lake Dobson, a scenic alpine lake. The park also contains Mount Mawson, popular for winter skiing. Public transportation to Mount Field is limited. Visitors typically drive, though some private bus tours operate from Hobart. Regular buses reach nearby towns like Westerway, but a vehicle is generally required to reach the park itself.
