Yengo National Park is located in New South Wales, Australia, within the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. The park lies approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Sydney, near the Hawkesbury River, and is bordered by the towns of Wollombi, Wisemans Ferry, and St Albans. Covering an area of about 1,540 square kilometers, it is known for its rugged bushland and deep cultural significance to Aboriginal people. The park was established in 1988, with a focus on preserving both its natural environment and its important Aboriginal heritage. Yengo is rich in cultural sites, including ancient rock carvings and ceremonial grounds of the Darkinjung, Darug, and Wonnarua peoples. The park’s history also includes its use as a wilderness escape during colonial times. Parking facilities are available at several key points, including Finchley Trig and Big Yengo precincts. These areas provide access to walking trails and picnic spots. Most of the parking areas are free, but visitors should be aware that vehicle access may require 4WD in certain parts of the park due to the rugged terrain. Yengo National Park is home to a variety of wildlife, including eastern grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies, and lace monitors. Bird species such as the wedge-tailed eagle, lyrebird, and gang-gang cockatoo can also be seen. The park is notable for its populations of the threatened glossy black cockatoo. Flora in Yengo National Park is dominated by dry eucalypt forests, with species such as grey gum, red bloodwood, and Sydney peppermint. There are also areas of heathland and patches of rainforest in sheltered areas. Notable features of the park include Mount Yengo, an important cultural landmark, and the expansive views from Finchley Trig lookout. Public transport is limited, so driving is the best way to access the park, particularly from nearby towns like Wollombi or Wisemans Ferry. Photo Credit: Peter Firminger
